A Palestinian was killed and eight other injured in a shooting incident in the Old City of Jerusalem on Friday noon.
Local daily Ha'aretz quoted the Jerusalem District Police Commissioner Aharon Franco as saying on its website that the incident took place near the Jaffa Gate of the Old City of Jerusalem, a compound housing the holy sites for Christians, Jews and Muslims.
He said that the shooting incident came as a result of wrestling between an Arab attacker and an Israeli security guard over the latter's weapon.
The attacker, who lives in the area, snatched away the weapon of the guard and shot the lower body of the guard, who was in moderate condition.
In response, a colleague of the injured guard ran after the Arab man, who escaped the scene in no time after the shooting, and fired several shots at the attacker during the chase, said Franco.
He added that the attacker eventually gunned down as a number of bystanders were injured by the stray bullets unfortunately.
Meanwhile, according to Magen David Adom (Red Cross in Israel), eight people were injured in the incident, four in moderate condition with the other four were lightly injured.
The wounded have been evacuated to hospital for treatment, said the report.
Following the incident, police has raised the alert level in the Old City of Jerusalem ahead of Muslim's Friday prayers.
