Unrest in Thailand's far south continued as a Border Patrol Police unit was ambushed by militants in the province of Narathiwat Friday. Three suspected insurgents were killed and one police officer wounded during the exchange of gunfire.

The police unit called for reinforcements when ambushed in Narathiwat's Sungai Padi district. The clash lasted for 30 minutes before the assailants retreated, Thai News Agency reported.

The dead bodies of three assailants and four weapons, including two assault rifles, were later recovered. Police Pvt. Pavee Chart was wounded in the leg and sent to hospital for treatment.

Earlier on Friday, in two other separate attacks in Narathiwat, one local resident was killed, another wounded in separate insurgent attacks.
