Kazakhstan will take all necessary measures to ensure security and stability during the Aug. 18 parliamentary elections, the Prosecutor-General's Office said Saturday.
The legitimacy and openness of the elections would be guaranteed because of Kazakhstan's existing law, various measures taken by the Central Election Commission, local election authorities and relevant departments of the country, as well as efforts made by observers home and abroad, the office was quoted by the Interfax news agency as saying in a statement.
They would prevent fraudulent practices and safeguard citizens' right to vote, said the statement, responding to reports that mass protests could be triggered by possible rigging of the elections.
It also warned that those who hold unapproved assemblies, demonstrations and strikes, incite ethnic or religious clashes and stage a riot to endanger national security will be prosecuted under the law.
In May, Kazakhstan's parliament passed a constitutional amendment that would increase the number of seats in the bicameral parliament from 116 to 154.
