The Trade Union Congress of Tanzania has issued to the government of Tanzania a 30-day ultimatum for it to review and raise the legal minimum wage.
The ultimatum was issued late on Saturday after hundreds of public service workers from 18 trade unions affiliated with the national Trade Union Congress of Tanzania had held a peaceful demonstration on the outskirts of Dar es Salaam.
The workers demanded that the government raise the legal minimum monthly wage from 84,000 Tanzanian shillings (67.2 U.S. dollars) to 315,000 shillings (252 dollars) to accommodate the rising prices of daily commodities and the rising inflation rates.
The statement containing the ultimatum explained that the minimum wage set by the government was not realistic and could not sustain an employer for one month after paying various fees.
The 84,000-shilling minimum wage was proposed to the Tanzanian National Assembly two weeks ago by Hawa Ghasia, minister of state from the president's office in charge of public services management.
