A retired senior police officer accused of attempting to bribe two Constitutional Tribunal judges surrendered to police investigators Monday morning.
Accompanied by his lawyer, Pol. Col. Charnchai Netirattakarn, 62, presented himself to assistant national police chief Pol. Lt. Gen. Jongrak Jutanont, who is also chief investigator on the case in the morning.
Jongrak said investigators would question the suspect and will send him to be fingerprinted at Bangkok's Chana Songkram police station because the bribery action took place at Sanam Luang ( Royal Field), which is within the jurisdiction of that police station, according to Thai News Agency.
Police investigators will also consider whether bail should be given to Col. Charnchai on the condition that the suspect will not escape, destroy evidence or threaten witnesses, Jongrak said.
Charnchai is accused of offering a 30 million baht (882,353 U.S dollars) bribe to two Constitution Tribunal judges before the hearings for the electoral fraud case that resulted in the dissolution of the Thai Rak Thai Party.
The bribe was offered in exchange for a not-guilty verdict for the now-defunct Thai Rak Thai party, according to the testimony of Krairirk Kasemsant, one of two Constitution Tribunal judges who were allegedly offered the bribe.
The Thai Rak Thai party, founded and formerly led by deposed prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, was ordered to dissolve in May by ruling of Constitution Tribunal judges on electoral rigging charges and 111 TRT party executives, including Thaksin, have been deprived of the right to seek re-election for five years.
