Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will embark on an Asian tour on Tuesday to Afghanistan, Turkmenistan and Kyrgyzstan, the official IRNA news agency reported on Monday.
Afghanistan is the first leg of the three-nation tour, which is the Iranian president's first visit to the neighboring country since he took office in August 2005.
President Ahmadinejad and his Afghan counterpart Hamid Karzai will discuss major bilateral, regional and international issues, according to IRNA.
Later on Tuesday, Ahmadinejad will leave Kabul for Ashkhabad, Turkmenistan, in response to the last June visit to Tehran of his Turkmen counterpart Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov.
It is expected that several agreements are expected to be signed between the two sides on cooperation in the fields of commerce, dam-building and radio and television projects.
Ahmadinejad will leave Ashkhabad for Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, on Thursday to attend a summit meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), IRNA said, adding the president will also hold separate meetings with officials from the SCO member states on the sidelines of the summit.
Dubbed a new model for regional cooperation, the SCO, in which Iran is one of the four observer states that also includes Mongolia, Pakistan and India, was founded in Shanghai, China, on June 15, 2001, aiming to promote regional security and fight terrorism.
The permanent members of the SCO are China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
