The authorities in French Polynesia confirmed Tuesday the sound recorder of the crashed Twin Otter plane has been located at a depth of 430 meters off Moorea.

According to Radio New Zealand, the French high commission said the recorder is similar to a blackbox and may contain clues as to why the plane plunged into the sea.

Air Moorea aircraft crashed last week shortly after taking from Moorea to nearby Tahiti, killing all 20 people on board.

The authorities said only 14 bodies have been recovered.

The cause of the crash is still unknown.

Officials said a robot will be available within two days which will allow for the recorder to be retrieved.
