Gunmen attacked a U.S. convoy in south of Baghdad on Tuesday, setting a fuel tanker ablaze, while an Iraqi policeman was killed in a separate incident in the city of Hilla, 100 km south of the capital, a police source said.
"Gunmen blew up a roadside bomb early in the morning near a passing U.S. convoy on the main road near the Mahawil area 80 km south of Baghdad, leaving a fuel tanker within the convoy on fire, " the source from Hilla City told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.
The blast followed by clashes between the U.S. forces and the attackers who were hiding in nearby buildings, the source added.
It was not clear whether there were more casualties among both sides as the U.S. troops cordoned off the area, he said.
The U.S. military has no immediate comment about the incident yet.
In separate incident, gunmen attacked Iraqi policemen in the downtown of Hilla City late on Monday, killing one policeman and wounding three others, the source said.
Insurgents often attack the Iraqi security forces and the U.S. troops in Baghdad and other Iraqi cities despite dozens of joint U. S. and Iraqi plans designed to put rampant violence under control.
