A crowded boat capsized in a flood-swollen river in an eastern Indian state of Bihar on Tuesday, killing seven members of a single family.

One woman and four children were among those who died when it went down in the Burhi Gandak river in Bihar, the Press Trust of India (PTI) reported.

The boat was carrying 30 passengers to a high embankment, the PTI quoted officials as saying. Twenty-three of them swam to safety as the accident occurred.

Rescuers have recovered the dead bodies, it said.
