The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) on Wednesday appealed for international emergency aid as continuous heavy rains have caused huge damage to this country's grain production.
"Now, we very very much need emergency aid from the international community to help our people to rebuild their homes, " said Dong Chang-sen, deputy director of the Bog Cang county, 112 km northeast of Pyongyang.
Since Aug. 4, floods caused by heavy rains have claimed 14 lives and damaged at least 2,800 civilian buildings in this small county.
"The green corns are the main food for our children, and flood came at the most important time for the growth of crops", Dong told Xinhua.
"The current torrential rains are causing heavier damage to farm crops than the previous ones in our country," said Ri Jae-hyon, Department Director of the DPRK Ministry of Agriculture, according to the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).
Ri also told the KCNA that at least 11 percent of rice and maize fields across the country have been submerged, buried or washed away.
The damage caused by floods was worse in the main grain planting areas including South Hwanghae Province, South Phyongan Province and North Hwanghae Province, the KCNA said.
"Over 200 pumping stations, more than 1,600 sections of waterways, upwards of 30 reservoirs, 450 agricultural structures and at least 800 sections of river and stream banks were destroyed," it added.
