A 50-million-U.S.-dollar grant agreement was signed on Wednesday between the government of Ethiopia and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to support and strengthen democratic governance institutions in the Horn of Africa nation.
Under the agreement, the grant would be used to enhance the programs in six major democratic governance institutions of the country in the Democratic Institutions Program (DIP), which aims at building their capacity so that they would effectively carry out their responsibilities.
The six major institutions include the Ethiopian Human Right Commission, the Ethiopian Institute of Ombudsmen, the Federal Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission, the House of Federation, the House of People's Representatives and Regional Councils and the National Election Board of Ethiopia.
DIP is a five-year multi-donor program funded by a number of donors including the British Department of International Development, Canadian International Development Agency, the UNDP, Swedish International Development Agency, Irish Aid, Austrian Cooperation, Italian Cooperation, the United States Agency for International Aid and the governments of the Netherlands, Denmark and Norway, among others.
