Israeli soldiers have uncovered an underground tunnel leading from the northern Gaza Strip towards Israel, army sources said on Wednesday.
A spokesperson of Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed to Xinhua that the tunnel shaft was discovered in northern Gaza Strip on Tuesday, adding that it was connected to a Gaza hothouse used to grow tomatoes and situated 700 meters from the border fence.
Israeli security forces noted that the tunnel is likely to be one of many which have been dug, or are being dug from Gaza into Israel, employed as means to infiltrate Israel in order to execute attacks against civilians, and for the purpose of smuggling weapons and illegal contraband.
IDF sources noted that a terror attack was foiled by uncovering the tunnel.
Earlier on Wednesday, an Israeli civilian was lightly wounded by shrapnel from a mortar shell that landed next to Erez Crossing on the border with Israel and Gaza.
The military wing of Hamas claimed responsibility for the shell, Israel Radio reported.
