Tatopani checkpoint, the main trade point between Nepal and China reopened on Thursday after negotiations among the local administrations of three districts, protesting traders and transport workers.
The protesters, who had been obstructing business at Tatopani checkpoint in Sindhupalchowk, some 130 km north of Kathmandu, for the last five days, agreed to withdraw the strike after assurance of security to them.
According to the National News Agency, RSS report, after a agreement was reached among the local administration, labors, traders and container entrepreneurs Wednesday, the closed border checkpoint resumed.
The agreement was reached by the presence of the Chief District Officers of Sindhupalchowk, Kavrepalanchowk and Bhaktapur districts and police chiefs. They had ensured to provide security along the highway.
The transport workers from the area of Tatopani section of the highway were worrisome due to the armed hooligans for the past days after the red sandalwood traders increased in the highway.
The traders had urged the local administration and the Home Ministry to provide security. However, no attention was paid to this respect. As a result, the transportation with cargo trucks was stopped.
When the only one commercial border linked with China's Tibet was closed, the Nepali government had to bear the loss of 30 million Nepali rupees (468,750 U.S. dollars), the RSS said. Daily revenue of 5-6 million rupees (78,125-93,750 dollars) is collected in this border, said Tatopani Customs Office.
