A spokesman for Hamas executive force announced that it detained the Palestinian Attorney General Ahmed al-Mughani on Thursday for hiding files related to murder and corruption.

Saber Khalifa said in a statement sent to the press that al- Mughani "tried to hide 120 files of senior Palestinian officials and security chiefs, who are involved in crimes of murder and corruption."

Pro-Fatah news website "Palpress" quoted eyewitnesses in Gaza City as saying that gunmen from Hamas executive force stopped al- Mughani's car and abducted him and his bodyguard.

But Khalifa denied the report, saying "the arrest took place in the attorney general's office."

On Wednesday, Yousef al-Mansy, minister of justice in the deposed government headed by Hamas in Gaza, fired al-Mughani and ordered the force to detain him for questioning. Al-Mansy appointed Moneer al-O'qbi as acting attorney general.

Meanwhile, the Attorney General office denied al-Mughani was sacked, insisting that he was still the attorney general of the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) "according to law."

In the statement issued after al-Mughani was arrested, the office said he was appointed as the PNA attorney general upon an official presidential decree.

"According to the Palestinian law, any haphazard amendment of law or any changes would be considered illegal," it added.

Hamas and its rival Fatah movement headed by President Mahmoud Abbas have been trading accusations, during which several officials from both side had been deposed, especially after Hamas unseated Abbas' security forces and controlled Gaza on June 14.
