Polish Defense Minister Aleksander Szczyglo met Slupsk governor Slawomir Ziemianowicz on Thursday to discuss the possibility of his region hosting a U.S. missile defense site.
Redzikowo, a now-defunct air base near Slupsk, which is close to the Baltic Sea coast, has been mentioned as a likely site for a U.S. base. Szczyglo declined to say whether Redzikowo would be chosen for the site.
During the meeting, Ziemianowicz sought information on how such a facility might affect the environment and businesses, Poland's PAP news agency reported.
Ziemianowicz told reporters he had been assured the unconfirmed facility would not cause environmental damage.
The United States wants to deploy part of its missile defense shield in eastern Europe -- a radar system in the Czech Republic and a missile interceptor site in Poland.
Polish-U.S. talks on the possible deployment have been going on since May.
