Despite good harvest in some SADC member states, securing food for all is still a daunting task, SADC Executive Secretary Tomaz Salomao said on Thursday during the opening ceremony of the 27th SADC summit for heads of state and government.
"Our food production continues to depend on rainfall. We have not yet made significant headway in tapping the abundant ground water," Salomao said.
Meanwhile, poor communication infrastructure continue to be a serious obstacle for transporting food from the production to consumption centers, he noted.
Besides, food processing and packaging is another challenge for SADC emerging farmers to compete in the open market.
"Food security is a matter of pride, self esteem, security and first line of defense," the executive secretary said.
He called on SADC member states to develop strategies to maximize energy of small and medium food producers and devise ways for investing in domestic food processing and packaging.
