Zambian President and SADC chairman Levy Mwanawasa on Thursday call on Zimbabweans to maintain unity under its current government.

"I wish to appeal to all Zimbabweans to maintain unity and safeguard your hard-won independence," said Mwanawasa.

The president, who took over chairmanship from Lesotho's Prime Minister Pakalitha Mosisili on Thursday, said the SADC family should not neglect the difficulties that Zimbabweans are going through, although the regional bloc is projecting a better economic performance.

The mini-political club in sub-Sahara is "always ready" to help member countries out of troubles, Mwanawasa added.

"SADC is there for you," the new SADC chairman said. "My strong advice to the brothers and sisters in Zimbabwe therefore is to maintain peace and stability at all costs."
