The Southern African Development Community (SADC) is undoubtedly one of the most peaceful part of the world and the basket of negative image that usually depicts the region is almost empty, SADC executive secretary Tromaz Salomao said here on Thursday in the opening speech of the 27th summit of SADC heads of state and government.
"The consolidation of democracy is not only an ongoing activity but also an integral part of SADC priorities," Salomao said, saluting the holding of successful elections in Zambia, Madagascar and Lesotho since the last summit.
Referring to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Salomao said that peace and stability are irreversible in the country despite "some pockets of instability."
The secretary said the challenges of democratic maturity are handled within the region by using rich experiences and wisdom of former heads of state.
Salomao attributed the peace in SADC to the hard work of various institutions and structures of the organ that made it possible to set in this peaceful and enjoyable environment.
