Five Afghan civilians were killed and three others injured during a clash between Taliban militants and the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) on Thursday, an ISAF statement said.
An ISAF unit was hit by a roadside bombing and came under fire from Taliban militants, the statement said, adding ISAF soldiers fought back.
"In the ensuing fire fight, five locals were killed and three others injured," the statement said.
It did not clearly say who caused the civilian casualties in the conflict.
ISAF personnel are on scene with Afghan authorities investigating the incident and the events that led up to it, according to the statement.
About 37,000 ISAF soldiers are being deployed in Afghanistan to hunt down militants and keep security.
Due to rising Taliban violence, over 3,900 persons have been killed in Afghanistan this year.
