Six employees of Bohunice Teaching Hospital in Brno, east of the Czech republic, were charged with illegal dealing with and trafficking in human tissues and organs, the daily Pravo reported on Thursday.
At least one of them faces the highest possible prison sentence that is 8 years in prison for this crime, if found guilty, the paper said.
Such sentence would be passed if it is proved the person earned at least 250,000 U.S. dollars in illegal trafficking in human organs or that the person was a member of an international gang, according to the paper.
This is probably the first major case of trafficking in human tissues in the Czech Republic.
It was uncovered by detectives from the organized crime police unit (UOOZ) in the operation called Human in 2003-2004, the paper said.
Thanks to information from the underground, the police succeeded in detaining one of the packages containing human tissues, it added.
According to investigators, two doctors, three other medical staff members and one of their relatives illegally took human skin grafts and sent them by air courier service for transplantation to the private Euroskinbank company in Beverwijk, the Netherlands.
