The powerful 7.9 magnitude earthquake that hit Peru's southern coast Wednesday evening has killed at least 450 people and injured 1,500 others, the Peru Geophysics Agency said Thursday.
The following is a chronology of major earthquakes in Peru since 1970:
May, 1970 -- An earthquake of 7.8 in magnitude killed 67,000 people in the northwest province of Ancash.
October, 1974 -- An earthquake measuring 6.6 in magnitude struck about 80 km southwest of Lima, leaving 78 people dead and 22,000 others homeless.
May, 1990 -- An earthquake of 5.8 in magnitude struck 130 km north of the town of Moyobamba, killing 101 people.
November, 1996 -- A 6.5-magnitude quake killed 17 people in the southern province of ICA.
June, 2001 -- A 6.9-magnitude quake devastated the southern provinces of Arequipa, Moquegua and Tacna, leaving 150 people dead and 100,000 homeless.
