The presidents of Ecuador and Uruguay signed on Thursday a wide range of bilateral agreements covering energy, trade, agriculture, tourism and other fields.
Uruguayan President Tabare Vazquez, whose country now holds the six-month rotating presidency of the Southern Common Market (Mercosur), began a two-day official visit to Quito on Wednesday night.
He is expected to restate an invitation for Ecuador to join the trade bloc, that also includes Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay.
Vazquez and his Ecuadorian counterpart Rafael Correa held a closed-door meeting in the president's office before signing the agreements aimed to boost political and trade ties between the two countries.
Vazquez, a trained oncologist, will visit a hospital run by the Fight Cancer Society on Friday. He is also expected to open a Uruguay-Ecuador Business Chamber meeting.
