Cote d'Ivoire's Foreign Minister Youssouf Bakayoko has said the government is planning to organize a conference in September for its honorary consuls to review their role in repositioning the country on the international scene with a view to reviving its economy.
"This conference has three main objectives, namely, diplomatic, economic and commercial as far as Cote d'Ivoire's international image is concerned," Bakayoko said Thursday during a press conference.
He said "honorary consuls can play an important role in the mobilization of foreign investors, within the current context of seeking financial support across the world, so as to revive our country's economy and reconstruction after the crisis."
"We would like to brief them on the real situation in the country, and to prove the gloomy picture often projected about our country as an unsafe destination for people and investments, does not correspond to the current reality," he said.
About 76 honorary consuls out of 94 invited will participate in this maiden conference scheduled to take place from Sept. 17 to 22.
According to Bakayoko, this gathering will provide an opportune forum for exchanging views and experiences between the honorary consuls, local economic and trade operators such as the chamber of commerce and industry, national bureau for technical and development studies (BNETD).
Cote d'Ivoire currently has 94 honorary consuls composed of journalists, pharmacists, lawyers, diplomats and antique dealers, whose main mission is to serve their country's economic, commercial and cultural interests on a voluntary basis within a region or in a given city across the world.
