The King of Thailand Bhumibol Adulyadej has approved the legislation that allows the registration of new political parties.

Government spokesman Yongyuth Maiyalarp said Friday that the King has already signed the new act.

Under the act, new political parties will be able to register themselves with the Election Commission and run in elections. Following the royal endorsement, the act will be published in the Royal Gazette and take effect.

Following the Sept. 19 coup, the Council for Democratic Reform issued a decree that bans the registration of political parties. The ban will be removed when the act takes effect.
