Greek Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis met with President Karolos Papoulias at the Presidential Mansion on Friday to propose the dissolution of parliament and the holding of early elections on Sept. 16.
The prime minister chaired an extraordinary cabinet meeting Friday prior to his meeting with the president.
Government spokesman Theodoros Roussopoulos said Thursday night that the prime minister would call for early elections for Sept. 16 during his meeting with the president.
"Being fully aware of its responsibility and being serious and confident, the government invites the Greek people to decide on Greece's future, providing it with a strong mandate for a new term. Many of the reforms implemented as of March 7, 2004 have already born fruit. Still, a lot remains to be done," Roussopoulos said.
"In view of the crucial battle to follow we present our work with mildness and arguments before the Greek people, excluding any past tensions. The people will be called to choose between reforms and the Pasok (the major opposition party) inconsistent policy, including its return to the past and adventurous policies," he said.
Roussopoulos also said Karamanlis will make extensive public statements on Friday after his meeting with Papoulias.
