The Fair Russia party could nominate Vladimir Putin for the presidency in 2012, the party's leader and Federation Council -- upper house of parliament -- Speaker Sergei Mironov told a news conference on Friday.
"Realizing that Vladimir Putin's third (presidential) term and amendments to the Constitution are not quite realistic today, I believe that Vladimir Putin's return as president of the Russian Federation in 2012 is absolutely possible. In my opinion, it is necessary," Mironov was quoted by the Interfax news agency as saying.
"Our party will be pleased to nominate Vladimir Putin as a presidential candidate in 2012," he said.
Russia is scheduled to hold presidential elections in March. Putin, who was re-elected in 1994 with over 71 percent of the vote, has presided over one of the most prosperous periods in Russian history and enjoys sky-high approval ratings in the polls.
Putin has consistently rejected suggestions that the constitution be amended to allow him to seek a third consecutive term.
