Zambian President Levy Mwanawasa has admitted the challenge Zambia faces in choosing between the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) , according Sunday Mail.
The local newspaper quoted him as saying here Friday night at a post-SADC summit media briefing that economists will have to advise the government on the way forward in choosing between the two regional groups.
One of the resolutions of the SADC council of ministers held to prepare the summit is that SADC members would eventually be asked to choose.
Mwanawasa, new SADC chairman, said he would have loved that member states do not have to choose between the SADC and COMESA, but rather harmonize policy differences in the different economic groups.
"We have a big challenge in Zambia, we are member of COMESA and we host the COMESA secretariat. We are also member of SADC, and presently I am the chairman of SADC. So, it becomes a very big problem for us to choose which organization to belong to," he said.
Nine SADC members are also members of COMESA.
