Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer announced Monday that Australia will provide 2 million Australian dollars (1.6 million U.S. dollars) toward emergency relief efforts in communities affected by floods in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).
"To assist relief efforts, Australia, through our international aid agency, AusAID, will contribute $2 million in food aid, which will be distributed by the World Food Program," Downer said in a statement.
The latest assistance is in addition to 4 million dollars (3.2 million U.S. dollars) in humanitarian assistance for food aid, essential medicines, clean water and sanitation Australia has provided to DPRK in the past year.
"Australia will continue to closely monitor emergency needs across the flood zone and stands ready to provide North Korea with further assistance if required," Downer said.
A serious flood damaged more than 11 percent of farmland and left over 300,000 victims in DPRK earlier this month after heavy rains stormed the country's capital city and six of nine provinces across the country.
