Registered voters in Kiribati are gearing up to go to the polls for the general election on Wednesday.
According to Radio New Zealand, there are 43,184 people registered to vote in the South Pacific territory Kiribati, with over 10,000 of those registered throughout Tarawa electorates.
Around 146 candidates are contesting this year's election of a 44-seat parliament.
The 33 atolls that make up Kiribati -- the former Gilbert Islands -- occupy a vast area in the Pacific.
With the population now of 85,000, the territory won independence from the United Kingdom in 1979. Many of the atolls are inhabited, most of which are very low-lying and at risk from rising sea levels.
