Former South African President Nelson Mandela met India's National Congress Party leader Sonia Gandhi in Johannesburg on Wednesday.

Gandhi, who arrived here on Tuesday, said that she was honored to be meeting Mandela, saying: "It is a privilege." She presented Mandela with a book.

Mandela who greeted everyone with a simple "hello" was seen paging through the Gandhian Way, a book based on the principles and values of Mahatma Gandhi.

Indian Foreign Minister Anand Sharma was also present.

While addressing the crowd, Sharma said: "It is a privilege and blessing to be in the presence of people who believe in human dignity and freedom. "

Gandhi was also scheduled to meet South African President Thabo Mbeki on Wednesday.

Her brief visit which was to strengthen relationships between the Indian and South African people would end on Thursday.
