About 20 Nigerien journalists from both public and private media houses have attended a symposium on the convention against torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading forms of punishment, reliable sources said Wednesday.
Organized by the Network of Journalists for Human Rights (RJDH) in partnership with the Open Society Initiative for West Africa ( OSIWA), the symposium, which was held Tuesday, enabled the journalists to familiarize themselves with the provisions of the convention.
Based on the universal declaration of human rights, the convention, which was ratified by Niger in 1998, describes torture as acute physical or moral suffering, which constitutes a flagrant violation of human rights.
According to the convention, a deliberate action by a public official with the precise goal of intimidating or gaining undue influence on someone can also be described as torture.
While addressing the gathering, Abdourahmane Ousmane, RJDH president, said that the civil society had a major role to play in the fight against torture.
Since the beginning of 2007, The RJDH has been involved in the organization of a series of training sessions, which are aimed at equipping journalists with the basic knowledge on human rights issues.
