The death toll in the monsoon floods and landslides that began from July 10 has been put at 146 by Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS), local newspaper The Rising Nepal reported Thursday.
The preliminary assessment carried out by district chapters of NRCS showed that 467,742 people of 78,606 families have been affected. Similarly, 70,605 houses have been damaged completely or partially and 22,257 families displaced.
47 districts out all 75 districts of Nepal have been affected by the monsoon floods and landslides. Districts in the whole Terai belt in southern Nepal have been affected the worst.
The assessment report states that fertile lands are covered with sand and the newly planted crops, mainly paddy, have been damaged. Infrastructure such as roads, bridges, schools and services are partly or completely damaged in the worst affected districts.
People who are taking shelter in community buildings, schools and temples, are still waiting for the water to recede and to return to their places.
The Red Cross, Nepali government, UN agencies and other humanitarian organizations are planning for renovation of houses, providing basic household items, restoring public infrastructure, addressing livelihood options and providing food, promotion of health promotion activities and renovation and repair of water resources.
