Kiribati's President Anote Tong has retained his parliamentary seat following Wednesday's national elections, Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) radio reported Thursday.

A total of 146 candidates are contesting the election for the 44-seat parliament.

Tong's seat was one of the first results declared from the poll.

Kiribati's Chief Electoral Officer Rine Ueara has told ABC that counting of votes in all 23 electoral districts should be completed later Thursday, paving the way for the first sitting of parliament.

It was reported that most of the candidates come from either the ruling party or the main opposition party.

Kiribati is an island nation located in the central tropical Pacific Ocean with a population of about 108,000.
