Gunmen stormed a village in the volatile province of Diyala, northeast of Baghdad, on Thursday, killing three people and wounding 13 others, a provincial police source said.
Dozens of gunmen early in the morning attacked a police checkpoint outside the village of Ibrahim al-Yehia, some 60 km northeast of Baghdad, the source from the provincial joint U.S. and Iraqi operation office told Xinhua.
"A policeman was killed and three others wounded in the fighting that erupted with the attackers at the checkpoint," the source said on condition of anonymity.
Afterwards, the gunmen rushed into the village and stormed a house, killing two people and wounding 10 others from one family, the source said.
The attackers are believed to be affiliated with al-Qaida in Iraq network, the source said.
Diyala province, which stretches from Baghdad to the Iranian border to the east, has long been the hotbed of insurgency and sectarian violence since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003.
