Chairman of the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) (CPN-M) has proposed postponement of the Constituent Assembly (CA) election till mid-April next year, reported the local media house's website nepalnews.com Friday.
Addressing an interaction program organized by his party in Nepali capital on Friday, Prachanda said that election cannot be held in an atmosphere of pressure.
"There are pressures and calls for holding election anyhow. In such an atmosphere, the CA will not resolve the nation's problems, " he said.
"We are in favor of real CA for which thousands of people of Nepal had made ultimate sacrifice. We cannot support when moves are made to hold election as if we are electing a parliament or National Panchayat (legislature of erstwhile Panchayat regime)," Prachanda added.
He said that while his party was in a strong position in June, the polls were postponed and that now when his party is trapped in a difficult situation, they were rushing through the election.
The CA election has already been postponed once when it was deferred till Nov. 22 from earlier commitment to hold it on mid- June. The parties had amended the interim constitution to incorporate the deferred date of the polls.
Prachanda's call for postponement of CA election has come at a time when the international community including India and European countries have pointed out the imperative of holding it on time in a free and fair manner. They have said that legitimacy of the government and the parties would come under question if the election is deferred again.
