Togolese traditional radical opposition party, Union of Forces for Change (UFC), will next week officially unveil its candidates for the forthcoming legislative elections, sources said Friday.
The party led by veteran opposition leader Gilchrist Olympio, is expected to present candidates in all regions across the country, according to the same sources.
UFC has attracted a large number of candidates for the polls. Contrary to the Rally for the Togolese peoples' party (RPT) led by president Faure Gnassingbe which has already held its internal primary elections to reduce the number of aspirants, UFC is conducting what it describes as "a selection operation" through internal dialogue to identify strong candidates, says the source.
UFC is hoping to obtain maximum votes in all electoral areas, according senior officials of the party, but observers reckon the current political dispensation is not conducive for such an eventuality.
These observers believe that Olympio's party will have an uphill task of winning electoral support in the northern RPT stronghold, or worse still in the Savanes region.
