U.S. Ambassador to Ethiopia Donald Yamamoto announced Friday that his country is providing 18. 7 million U.S. dollars in humanitarian assistance for needs in east Ethiopia's Somali region.
Yamamoto said in a statement that the U.S. government is working with the Ethiopian government and international and NGO partners to help humanitarian operations in Somali region.
The Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA) of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has committed nearly 3.7 million dollars in emergency relief for health, nutrition, and livelihood programs support for needy people in Somali region.
In addition, USAID recently provided over 15 million dollars of emergency food assistance to the UN World Food Program (WFP) in response to food insecurity in Somali region.
The United States has provided over 200 million dollars to support humanitarian programs throughout Ethiopia this year, including the delivery of food aid, strengthening disaster preparedness, and implementing emergency nutrition, health, and water programs.
