The Chief of the United Nations Mission in Nepal (UNMIN) Ian Martin has stressed the key role of media in enabling people to participate in the forthcoming Constituent Assembly (CA) polls in an informed way, reported the Independent News Service Sunday.
Addressing a program on "Constituent Assembly and the Role of Media" organized by Federation of Nepalese Journalists (FNJ) in the capital on Sunday, Martin said the role of the media was extremely important in the context of any election, and especially in an election that is very important for the future of the country.
Martin said during his recent visit to the Far Western region of the country, where he met with district officials, including the heads of the Nepal Police and the Armed Police Force, representatives of political parties and civil society, the press corps, he found people showing readiness to participate in the CA polls.
"I heard again and again, the need for more information for voter education and civic education, and for the political parties to begin operation at the village level in the preparation for the election" said Martin, adding that the media has a key role to bring clear, comprehensive and accurate information to people in all parts of the country, and enable people to participate in the process in an informed and active way.
"The Government, the Election Commission and civil society have a responsibility to ensure that no section of the community is excluded from receiving information about the electoral and political process", said Martin, adding the media can help to make sure that information reaches all sectors of the population.
