The new leadership of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) has been named Monday by party president and prime minister Shinzo Abe, local media reported.
Following Foreign Minister Taro Aso's acceptance of the post as the party secretary general on Sunday, Abe named Toshihiro Nikai chairman of the LDP General Council and Nobuteru Ishihara as chairman of the party's Policy Research Council, Kyodo News and local TV said.
The official announcement of the three new party executives is to be made later in the day. Abe is also to reshuffle the Cabinet later on Monday.
Following the LDP's failure to retain majority in the House of Councilors after the election last month, Abe said he would reshuffle the Cabinet and the ruling party leadership in August.
