Gunmen attacked a village south of Baghdad, killing at least seven people and wounding four others, a well-informed police source said on Monday.
"Gunmen stormed the Sunni village of Jurf al-Sakhar near the town of Iskandriyah, some 50 km south of Baghdad, late on Sunday night and fought fierce clashes with the villagers," the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.
The clashes, which continued to the dawn, resulted in the killing of seven villagers and the wounding of four others, the source said, adding that it was unknown how many of the attackers were killed or injured in the fighting.
U.S. and Iraqi forces rushed to the area in the morning to provide security for the medical and rescue teams, the source said.
Residents of the village blamed militants of the al-Qaida in Iraq network for the attack, the source added.
Al-Qaida's adherence to a hardline form of Sunni Islam and indiscriminate killings has brought it into conflict with some Sunni tribes in the restive area, named the Triangle of Death, in northern part of the province of Babil, where the village located.
