Two U.S. soldiers were gunned down on Sunday in area north of Baghdad, the U.S. military said on Monday.

The soldiers, assigned to Task Force Lightning, were killed by "enemy gunfire" in Salahudin province, the military said in a brief statement.

The names of the soldiers are being withheld pending notification of next of kin, it added.

The latest deaths bring the number of U.S. soldiers who have been killed in Iraq to more than 3,725 since the Iraq war broke out in 2003, according to media count based on Pentagon figures.
