French President Nicolas Sarkozy said Monday that "an Iran equipped with a nuclear arm" was " unacceptable," and that the crisis surrounding its nuclear program was "no doubt a very serious international issue."

Sakorzy said this when he addressed the French ambassadors' conference which began here Monday.

"I strongly believe that an Iran equipped with a nuclear arm is unacceptable," Sarkozy said. According to him, the Iranian nuclear crisis is "no doubt a very serious international issue."

"France will spare no efforts in convincing Iran that it has a lot to gain by engaging in serious negotiations with Europeans, Chinese, Russians and Americans," he said.

The French head of state said that France "fully supported the current approach, from increasing sanctions to openness if at all Iran decides to respects its obligations."

"This approach is the only one that can enable us to avoid a disastrous alternative: an Iranian bomb or the bombing of Iran," he said.
