Egypt has decided to extend assistance to Greece to help overcome the massive consequences of fires burning Greek forests these days, the Egyptian official MENA news agency reported on Monday.
Egypt will dispatch a military plane loaded with tents to help provide shelters for the homeless who were displaced by the fires, Egyptian Cabinet spokesman Magdi Radi was quoted as saying.
Meanwhile, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on Monday made a telephone call to his Greek counterpart Karolos Papoulias, expressing deep sorrow over the fires that have claimed dozens of lives since it broke out last week.
According to a report by Greece's Net TV, a total of 60 new blazes broke out in the southeast European country on Sunday and the death toll has subsequently risen to 63 by Monday morning.
Greece declared a nationwide state of emergency on Saturday as the unprecedented wave of wildfire fanned by gale-force winds and heat has ravaged the country, particularly the southern region of Peloponnese, amid widespread speculation of arson.
