Cooperation between the European Union and NATO needs to be developed in rapid response crisis management, said Finnish President Tarja Halonen in a speech to heads of Finnish diplomatic missions who gathered in Helsinki on Monday.

The non-NATO members of the EU are not an impediment to this, Halonen added. Finland's possible participation in the NATO Response Force (NRF) needs to be assessed on the same basis as participation in all types of international crisis management, she said.

She also emphasized that although Finland is engaged in close cooperation with Sweden in the field of rapid action forces, Finland will make its own decisions from its own starting points, and according to its own interests.
