Cross border and other travellers between Zimbabwe and Botswana will soon benefit from the introduction of an additional border post to be opened south of Plumtree, ZBC News reported on Monday.
This was revealed by foreign affairs minister Simbarashe Mumbengegwi, who attended the 10th session of the Zimbabwe- Botswana joint commission in Gaborone, Botswana, recently.
Mumbengegwi said the new border post should be opened by the end of September this year.
The additional crossing point aimed at easing and facilitating the free movement of people is in keeping with the spirit of SADC cooperation and neighborliness, under which the establishment of a free trade area is envisaged next year.
Mumbengegwi further disclosed that the joint commission also called for the increasing of the frequency of the passenger train service between Zimbabwe and Botswana as it has proved to be very popular with travellers on both sides, but is currently plying the route only thrice a week.
In the area of wildlife management, the two countries which have vast animal life resources, including the elephant and buffaloes, agreed to cooperate in the counting of large mammals to ensure sustainable development.
Mumbengegwi said the two countries are happy with the progress on the implementation of the Kazungula bridge where funding is being secured and work is already underway to design the structure.
In the area of economics and trade Zimbabwe and Botswana concluded a trade bilateral agreement, the bilateral investment protection agreement and the bilateral air service agreement.
Mumbengegwi commended the excellent relations between Zimbabwe and Botswana saying the joint commission was held in a friendly and very cordial atmosphere.
The next biennial Zimbabwe-Botswana joint commission session will be held in Harare in 2009.
