Eleven people were killed and 22 others seriously injured in an auto accident on the Gombe-Biu road in Northeast Nigeria on Saturday night, according to an official with the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC).
Francis Udoma, the FRSC Sector Commander in Nigeria's Gombe State, told local media on Sunday that the accident, involving a lorry carrying 57 passengers, occurred at about 10 p.m.. He said the driver lost control and veered of course.
One of the victims, Abubakar Umar, who is receiving treatment at the Federal Medical Center, Gombe, was quoted as saying that the driver was trying to avoid the numerous potholes on the road.
Umar, who lost a leg, said the vehicle somersaulted several times.
The accident is the third in recent times on the road.
In October 2006, nine students of University of Maiduguri lost their lives when their bus crashed after running into a pothole.
Again in November 2006, 10 people died and 27 were injured in another accident on the road.
