Jordan has detained a total of 4,399 illegal guest workers since April and deported 1,204 workers, Jordan Times newspaper reported on Monday.
According to the report, Jordan's labor and interior ministries in mid-April started taking a series of procedures to tackle the issue of illegal foreign workers in an effort to enforce labor and residency laws.
Approximately 80 percent of the total number of foreign workers tracked down by inspection teams were Egyptians, while Syrians formed the second largest group, Amin Wreidat, health inspection director of the Labor Ministry, was quoted as saying.
The Labor Ministry has proposed forming a permanent committee to follow up on guest workers' affairs.
