U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Population, Refugees and Migration Ellen Sauerbrey announced on Tuesday that the United States will contribute 30 million U.S. dollars to help tens of thousands of Iraqi children to go back to schools.
Ellen Sauerbrey, who is currently on a visit to Jordan, said the 30 million dollars would go toward a joint appeal issued by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) for 129 million dollars to send to 155, 000 Iraqi children in Syria, Jordan, Egypt and Lebanon to school from the next academic year.
"We encourage all potential donors to join us in supporting this appeal," Sauerbrey said at a girls school in which 145 Iraqi students were admitted earlier this month, "I am convinced that educating Iraqi children is one of the most critical ingredients for a peaceful and prosperous Iraq."
The Jordanian Ministry of Education finalized a decision to allow 50,000 Iraqi students to study in public schools as of the beginning of this scholastic year, without the prerequisite residency permit.
However, some people concern that the wave of new students could overburden the education system.
