Kenyan police shot dead seven gangsters in separate incidents in Nairobi on Tuesday as the crackdown on soaring crime wave intensifies countrywide.

Police spokesman Eric Kiraithe said four suspected carjackers were shot dead by the police on patrol in Ruai neighborhood, east of Nairobi, while three suspected members of the criminal Mungiki gang were gunned down in two residential estates.

"Our security forces were tipped by members of the public and managed to shoot dead the carjackers in a dramatic car chase. The officers recovered a riffle and twenty rounds of ammunition," Kiraithe said by telephone.

He warned that the crackdown on the rising insecurity in the country would continue to bring to end politically-linked criminal gangs, causing panic ahead of this year's general elections.

The police have been able to foil various robberies in several parts of the country, particularly in Nairobi which records the highest number of carjackings and other armed robberies.

The surging violence, which comes in the run-up to Kenya's general elections scheduled for the end of this year, has triggered a fierce police response which has left more than 100 members of Mungiki sect dead and seen more than 3,000 arrests nationwide.

The latest violence has set off an acrimonious debate, with critics accusing some politicians of exploiting the country's jobless youth to spark unrest ahead of the elections.
