Algeria and Tunisia on Tuesday conducted joint naval rescue exercises in Tunisian territorial waters, the Algerian News Agency (APS) reported Tuesday.

The exercises dubbed "SARAX 07" are aimed at strengthening the level of coordination between the two countries' naval forces in rescue operations.

They are also aimed at testing the "intervention and rescue capacities of the Algerian naval forces in case of emergency in the high seas," according to APS.

The exercises consisted of staging a mock rescue operation for survivors of a merchant ship which has collided with a gas tanker in Tunisian waters close to the Algerian maritime border.

Members of disaster and emergency, as well as health services took part in these successful joint exercises, according to APS.
